The eye lands on the gold first. Against a deep, matte-black surface, the word KANSAS sits in tall collegiate lettering, outlined rather than filled, so the light seems to trace it rather than shout it. Everything else on the tumbler arranges itself around that one line.
Design Story
Above the wordmark, a thin ruled box reads UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS. Below it, JAYHAWKS in a softer serif, then the familiar Jayhawk mascot rendered in warm gold and shadow, striding forward with that faintly amused, confident tilt of the beak. EST. 1865 anchors the bottom of the focal panel. The background carries a subtle scratched, brushed texture that keeps the black from going flat, while gold banding at the top and a V-shaped chevron near the base break the vertical proportion into clean sections. It is a blackout palette doing what blackout palettes do best: making a small amount of gold feel like a lot.
Use & Experience
On a tall tumbler silhouette, the composition works because it stacks. The wordmark holds the front-facing focal area at eye level, the mascot sits just beneath it as the visual anchor, and the darker lower section gives the whole thing room to breathe. The handle sits to the side without cutting into the graphic, so the design stays readable from across a desk, a bleacher row or a kitchen counter.
